The General Director of UNESCO asked to urgently convene the UN Security Council after the destruction of the statues and sculptures with thousands of years history, dating back to the Assyrian period (7th century BC), removed from the museum of Mosul in northern Iraq.
“This attack is much more than a tragedy for culture, also poses a security issue as fueling sectarianism, violent extremism and conflict in Iraq,” complained the official UNESCO Irina Bokova in a press release after publishing a video uploaded to the Internet on behalf of the Islamic State.
